Thailand is famous for its Hom Mali rice, known worldwide as Jasmine rice. It has an excellent fragrance and appearance both before and after cooking. The texture is soft, white, tender and naturally fragrant.
The second type of fragrant rice produced in Thailand — a new strain developed at the Pathumthani Rice Institute. It shares a similar outlook and texture with Thai Jasmine rice, carrying an authentic natural fragrance.
Thai white rice belongs to the Indica long grain family, grown mainly in central Thailand where a good irrigation system yields two to three crops per year. Its superior quality is well known worldwide, with customers in more than 100 countries and rapidly increasing export volume.
Also known as sticky or sweet rice, its natural milky color is the main distinction from white rice. Glutinous rice is enjoyed across most Asian countries as rice, rice powder, snacks and brewery. The most popular Thai glutinous rice is grown in the northern part of the country.
Parboiled rice is a special pre-cooked rice — soaked and pressure-steamed before it is milled. It is very rich in vitamins and minerals, with a golden color that mainly fades after cooking. Thailand has many parboiled rice mills catering specially for export.
